Help with getting into med school?

I am currently a sophmore at UIC. The science courses are extremely difficult here and I try my best but because the exams are so tricky I do not do well. I try my hardest but I end up with C’s in chemistry. Right now my gpa is 3.07. I am trying to raise it. I want to be a cosmetic doctor. By this, I mean I want to do injections such as botox and dermal fillers, and lasers. I do not want to do plastic surgery.

Over this past summer I worked for a plastic surgeon. Right now, I am working in the UIC writing center as a tutor and will continue till I receive my degree. I was thinking of getting a reccomendation from the head of the writing center and the plastic surgeon I worked for over the summer for med school. In addition there is an indian organization in which i help children learn how to dance and I have organized events for them. I am very active in this indian organization as well and perform dances. In high school, I volunteered at a nursing home. Right now I am taking an Anthropology course and my professor is the head curator of Africa at the field museum of natural history in Chicago. There is an internship offered at the museum in the summer where you get to work with a curator and choose your own research project. Only six students receive this opportunity. I want to try for this opportunity as it could help with med school applications.

I am not a science person and to be honest, I personally would not choose to be a doctor if I could not be a cosmetic doctor. The only reason I want to be a doctor is so that i can be a cosmetic doctor. It is the one thing I am truly passionate about. I know everything about dermal fillers, botox, and lasers. If I were a cosmetic doctor I would strive to be the best cosmetic doctor because it is what I am passionate about. However, I am not passionate about being a doctor, but if I was a cosmetic doctor I would be the best cosmetic doctor I could possibly be.

Do I have a good shot at getting into med school or are my chances low? Med school is highly competitive and I may not be a genius, but I want this more than anything so that I can be a cosmetic doctor.

Regardless of what your specialty ends up being, you have to take all the same kinds of courses as any other doctor would.

While all those opportunities you talk about sound great, they’re not really geared toward a medical profession. They’re more the sort of things an admissions counselor would look for from someone who wanted to study anthropology or a social science. Try to pursue extracurricular activities that are more science oriented, and, of course, keep working on those science classes that are giving you trouble.

Good luck. :)

Med school is the toughest professional school to get into.

Your overall GPA should be > 3.3. Your science GPA needs to be above 3.5. The odds are stacked against you.
